Seed Cycling for Hormone Balancing

We are surrounded and intertwined with natural cycles whether we stop to notice or not. We move from morning to night through our daily routines and the seasons progress with weather and a string of holidays and our bodies correspondingly go through natural cycles.   One of the most infamous of these is the menstrual cycle in women. (Hang in there men, you are not devoid of cycles yourself!) Unfortunately, because issues such as painful cramping, mood changes, breast tenderness and heavy bleeding are common phenomena in our society, many women assume that this is normal. If you or someone you care about experiences pain and discomfort during their period, please let them know that actually, this is not normal and there are plenty of resources including Chinese medicine that can bring the body back into balance.

Regulating the menstrual cycle in important not only to relieve women from pain, but also to promote good reproductive health into the childbearing years and maintaining optimal iron and nutrient levels to name a few.

Balancing hormone cycles also assures a healthier aging process and allows women to go through menopause without the unneeded side effects of hot flashes (also NOT normal and very treatable with natural methods, foods, herbs, acupuncture, etc.)

There are two main phases of the menstrual cycle:
Phase 1:(Follicular Phase) From Day 1 of the menstrual period (bleeding begins) until Ovulation.  Estrogen is the superstar here working towards ovulation for around the first 14 days (or a tad longer if you have longer cycles)

Phase 2: (Luteal Phase) From ovulation to the first day of menstruation.  This part of the cycle is when Progesterone is produced and is generally 14 days long.

Seeds offer a great benefit in promoting hormone regulation as they contain components called lignans and essentially fatty acids such as Omega-3s and Omega 6s to assist the hormone pathways and receptor sites. (My best non-sciency short summary,)Here's how to make it work for you:

During the 1st Phase: From day 1-day 14. New Moon ("Estrogen Party - Omega 3s")
1 to 2 Tablespoons of Organic, Raw and GROUND FLAX seeds, PUMPKIN seeds or whole CHIA seeds.

Combine this with a high quality Fish Oil (also promoting Omega 3s) Store in the fridge to prevent it going rancid. (I use Isagenix Brand and also like Nordic Naturals brand)

During Phase 2: From day 15-28. Full Moon - Ovulation to Menstruation ("Progesterone Pals - Omega 6s")
1-2 Tablespoons of Organic, Raw and Ground SESAME and/or SUNFLOWER seeds.

You can combine this with Evening Primrose Oil which is available at local health good grocery stores and online.

KEY POINTS:

* GRIND the seeds. I have a coffee grinder specifically for this purpose. Seeds must be ground in order to get the goodness into your body. You're a human, not a nut cracker.

*TIMING:  The moon has often been a symbol of women's cycles. Ideally, we'd like to ovulate on the full moon and menstruate on the new moon.  I recommend that women in their childbearing years begin with how their physical cycles are now.  Women with very irregular cycles or post menopausal women without cycles may choose to follow the moon cycles.

*MEN can support a healthy balance of hormones as well by reversing the cycle described above. From the new moon until the full moon: 1-2 tablespoons of ground sesame or sunflower seeds and from the full moon until the new moon: 1-2 tablespoons of ground flax or pumpkin seeds.

Questions? Comments?  I love to hear how this is working for you. Feel free to post a comment here or let me know through the Contacts page.  Enjoy!

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your question. I think it's a common one that many women are thinking about and the answer can depend.

The length of time you do the seed cycling depends on your health goals and what you're looking to accomplish.

If you're having symptoms such as headaches that you believe are influenced by hormones, you may want to try a period of two to three months of using seed cycling pretty diligently, meaning, almost everyday you're having a few tablespoons of the appropriate seeds with meals.

It's especially important for women to give it a few months because of the rhythm of the menstrual cycle and giving that time to be influenced effectively.

Once you feel you're getting the positive benefits, you may be able to use the appropriate seeds less regularly, or more at just certain times of your cycle. This is also something that your natural health care practitioner can advise you on (for example, a naturopath or acupuncturist).

Because seed cycling is a food based medicine, it can be integrated into your everyday diet without ill effects.

I hope that helps :) Enjoy the cycles!!
Leslie

Hi Leslie,
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I appreciate it greatly.
I would like to use the seed cycling to make my cycles regular and to improve fertility as I am trying to get pregnant. I have had my period few days ago so I am taking flax now. If I had found out about the seed cycling sooner I would have tried to synchronise myself with moon phases because I have not had a period for 3 months right before the current one. Questions:
1. How important is it to be in sync with the moon? What would the benefits be?
2. Let’s say I take the seeds for 28 days but bleeding does not come. What do I do? I guess I could give it extra few days but if still nothing happens what should someone do?
3. You recommend 1 to 2 tbs. Which is better?
4. You said: “.... post menopausal women without cycles may choose to follow the moon cycles.” Why would they do that? They are not trying to bring their cycles back are they?

Sorry about all the questions but I find your article fascinating and I want to do everything right so it works for me.
Thank you in advance.

Egg white cervical mucus appears at ovulation time. Best time to notice kind of cervical mucus you have during your cycle. This will assist you to determine the most productive days of your cycle.

Hello,

Is it OK to eat other seeds and nuts alongside whatever seeds you are on during the cycling? For example, I like adding hemp hearts or walnuts to my morning oatmeal. Will ingesting other types of seeds/nuts throw things off?

Also, instead of ground sesame seeds, can I just use raw sprouted organic tahini. It's basically already ground sesame seeds - no added oils or anything.

Thank you!

hello, thank you so much for this insightful article, I used to have pretty regular cycles but lately I haven't had my periods in 25 days and I'm very intersted in doing the seed cycling, now my question is should i wait until i get my periods and start doing the seed cycling or should i start today with phase 2 knowing that it is a full moon tonight. Ps: I'm 24 years old

Can you pre-grind seeds for the week or do they need to be ground daily? It would make it so much more convenient if they could be ground ahead of time :)

Can you replace the ground seeds with pure organic oil of the seeds or the butter form of the seed?

Hi Kris, the oil seems like a pretty safe substitution (making sure you're keeping stuff fresh as it goes rancid quickly.) I'd still strive to incorporate some of the freshly ground seeds. Off the top of my head, it feels like you'd get some points for consuming the sunflower seed butter, however, nut butters, even the natural kinds, are still processed and combined with other ingredients so I can't say for sure how much of the needed lignans etc. you are getting with butters. I just haven't seen the research on that one.
I hope that helps, Happy Cycling!
